New energy vehicle battery maintenance secrets: charging habits determine battery life
The heart of new energy vehicles is undoubtedly the battery. From a technical point of view, the battery not only determines the life of the car,but also directly affects the overall service life of the vehicle. As the vehicle's life grows, the battery performance gradually decreases and may eventually need to be replaced, and this process is often accompanied by higher costs. Therefore, developing good charging habits is crucial to extending battery life!
Today, let's give you a popular science, how to charge to make the new energy vehicle battery longer.
01 Lithium iron phosphate and ternary lithium batteries: comparison of two power batteries
At present, two types of batteries are mainly used in the field of new energy vehicles:lithium iron phosphate batteries and ternary lithium batteries. The positive electrode material of the lithium iron phosphate battery is lithium iron phosphate, and the positive electrode material of the ternary lithium battery is composed of nickel, cobalt, manganese(or aluminum) and lithium. The negative electrode of both batteries is graphite, and the main component of their electrolyte is lithium hexafluorophosphate.
Lithium iron phosphate batteries stand out for their economy, durability, high safety and heat resistance.Due to its low raw material cost, the manufacturing cost of lithium iron phosphate batteries is usually lower than that of ternary lithium batteries, and has the advantage of being non-toxic and environmentally friendly. After 2000 complete charge and discharge cycles, the capacity of the lithium iron phosphate battery can still be maintained at more than 80%.In addition, even in the case of internal or external damage, lithium iron phosphate batteries will not explode, showing extremely high safety stability. It can also withstand high temperatures of up to 500 degrees Celsius,in contrast, the temperature resistance of ternary lithium batteries is about 200 degrees Celsius, which makes the stability of lithium iron phosphate batteries in high temperature environments more excellent.
Ternary lithium batteries are known for their high energy density, excellent charging efficiency and good low temperature performance. At present, the energy density of ternary lithium batteries generally exceeds 240Wh/kg,and has the potential to further increase to 300Wh/kg in the future. In addition, the voltage platform of ternary lithium batteries is higher than that of lithium iron phosphate batteries.
Under extremely low temperature conditions, such as minus 20°C,the terpolymer lithium battery can still maintain more than 70% of the discharge capacity, while the lithium iron phosphate battery under the same conditions the discharge capacity is reduced to about 55%.This indicates that the performance of ternary lithium batteries is superior at low temperatures.
02 Battery longer life charging secrets
1. Activating batteries is a mistake
Some owners may have heard that a newly purchased car needs to activate its battery through three consecutive"full discharge"sessions of more than 12 hours. This claim comes from a technical term in the battery manufacturing process-battery formation. In fact, this step is done by the manufacturer before the battery leaves the factory,so the owner does not have to repeat the procedure.
2. Timely charging:Avoid battery exhaustion
Maintaining lithium battery power in the range of 20% to 90% can effectively extend the service life of the battery. Therefore, when your car's charge drops to 20% to 35%,you should arrange to recharge as soon as possible.Avoid looking for a charging pile when the power is very low, which will not only increase the anxiety of looking for charging facilities, but also cause greater damage to the health of the battery.
3. Overcharging is undesirable
Most charging stations, especially DC fast charging stations, automatically reduce the current when the battery reaches about 90 to 95 percent, entering a so-called "trickle charging" mode, where the charging rate slows down significantly. If you often let the battery full to 100%,you may cause unnecessary damage to the battery. Therefore, unless you need to maximize the driving distance,it is recommended to set the charging limit to no more than 90%,which can better protect the battery and extend its life.
03 Daily charging guide: The key points of battery maintenance can not be ignored
Whether it is lithium iron phosphate battery or ternary lithium battery, new energy vehicles should follow the following key guidelines when carrying out daily charging:
1. Avoid high temperature charging
High temperature environments have a negative impact on battery life.In high temperature seasons such as summer, you should choose a charging location that avoids direct sunlight. Before charging, turn off the vehicle for 10 minutes to allow the battery temperature to decrease naturally, and then start the charging process.
2. Even if you do not often drive, new energy vehicles need to be regularly charged
With the arrival of summer, some car owners may choose to park their vehicles in a safe and shady place. However, here is a reminder:when your new energy vehicle is not used for a long time, you should ensure that the battery is fully charged before parking.Leaving the battery low for a long period of time can lead to rapid loss of power, which in turn shortens the battery's life.
The longer a battery is idle, the more likely it is to be damaged. Therefore,in order to maintain the health of the battery pack, even if the vehicle is not often used,it should be regularly charged.
